Getting In Touch With Nature

On Magnetic Island there's accommodation that suits every person's style and budget. You can choose from luxurious resorts that offer ocean views, stylish apartments, holiday houses perfect for that weekend getaway with friends or family and backpacker retreats. Even though I lived in Townsville, only a 20 minute ferry ride from Magnetic Island, I would on the occasion treat myself to a weekend away on this beautiful piece of land and my go to place to stay would always be Bungalow Bay!

Double Bungalow

Nestled among the bushland, these bungalows provide basic living allowing you to really get in touch with nature. Each bungalow has a balcony with a chair, access to shared bathroom facilities (some have ensuites), a bar fridge, double bed with linen and a ceiling fan (some have air conditioning). Being on ground level you can expect to hear the many sounds of the wild including leaves rustling in the wind, nuts and twigs falling on your roof and possibly even possums rummaging underneath your bungalow!

Other accomodation options include camp sites, backpacker shared bungalows with bunk beds and ensuite doubles.

Bungalow Bay offers facilities including a tour desk where you can book and check out the activities available on the island and also their "Deck Bar" which is an open space where you can lounge on the massive bean bags or join others around a table and enjoy cocktails and delicious bar snack food (their pizzas are amazing!). If you're after a proper meal out, it's only a short, flat walk to Horseshoe Bay where there are plenty of eateries to choose from.

Being a backpackers retreat there is the opportunity to mingle and get to know your fellow travellers with nightly bar activities run by the staff including Trivia Tuesday, Pictionary Wednesday and Coconut Bowling Thursday to name a few. Being an outdoor balcony be prepared to be interrupted by guests of the furry kind; possums! They usually just sit on the ceiling timber beams and watch you from above, but if you have food handy some will bravely come down and may even eat out of your hand!

One thing that sets this place apart from the rest is that Bungalow Bay is the only resort in Australia that has it's own on site wildlife park, Koala Village! Everybody, regardless if you're a guest in accomodation or not, has the opportunity to have hands on interaction (including holding a koala and even a python) and learn all about the wonderful wildlife residents of Magnetic Island.

Another wildlife interaction that Bungalow Bay holds on a daily afternoon around 4pm is the lorikeet feeding. Lorikeets are colourful birds and although small in size, their noises pack quite a punch, especially when they flock in their hundreds! These lorikeets are wild but thanks to the consistent afternoon feeding, they know when to arrive and are a highlight for any guest. Once the food is in your hands there is no stopping them! They will happily sit in your hand and eat, some will even sit on your shoulders or the top of your head (bird droppings are probably guaranteed but the experience is worth it!)
